What affects the cost of a wedding cake? Well, lets' see...

A three-tiered cake is standard. More tiers means more expense that is passed on to you from the baker.

If your budget is tight, buy a small wedding cake. Make up the difference with sheet cakes.

The most basic cake is a twist on a sponge cake -- often a genoise. Cheesecakes are much more expensive. Pound cake is somewhere between those two.

The more time-intensive a cake is to make, the steeper the price.

Butter Cream tastes great, and is easy to use, but hard to make look really smooth.

Cream Cheese tastes great and costs about as much as Butter Cream.

Fondant is the least tasty, but allows a cake designer to do almost anything they want.

Square cakes cost more since they require special pans, and harder to frost.
